PUBLIC DEBATE: What is the character of the Agrarian question in contemporary Africa? Perspectives from East, West and Southern Africa

Land and agriculture remain critically important sources of livelihood across Africa, even as rates of urbanization begin to increase. Yet rural poverty continues to be a major feature of African societies. Can policies that secure access to land and natural resources, and promote agricultural development, contribute to a wider process of social and economic renewal? What other sectors are also in need of investment and growth? Does this require a re-thinking of the classical Agrarian Question in the conditions of the 21st Century? Three leading scholars located in different parts of the continent will debate these thorny questions.
